Historien, ethnomusicologue et poète. Traducteur d'Albert Camus, René Char et Saint-John Perse. Professeur de bengali, anglais et français à Pondicherry, Inde (en 1966). Doctorat d'État (Paris IV). Chercheur au Laboratoire des langues et civilisations à tradition orale, LACITO, CNRS, Paris (en 2004).
